About NBAOS

What is NBAOS?
NBAOS is the National Board of Accreditation for Orthotic Suppliers, which was incorporated in Indiana on September 27, 2006. It was created to ensure high quality patient care through standards of excellence for orthotic providers. The corporate office is in Chicago, Illinois.

Why was NBAOS Created?
The American Society of Hand Therapists (ASHT) and the Hand Therapy Certification Commission (HTCC) recognized that this accreditation process needed to be available to facilities in which occupational therapists and physical therapists work.

NBAOS Selected by CMS as Accrediting Organization
In November 2006, CMS selected NBAOS as a national accrediting organization and awarded it deeming authority to accredit facilities that supply durable medical equipment, prosthetics & orthotics, and supplies to Medicare beneficiaries.

Scope of Services Accredited by NBAOS
The scope of services accredited through NBAOS include custom-fabricated orthoses, off-the shelf, and prefabricated orthoses, as well as canes, walkers, crutches, hot/cold applications, surgical dressings, traction equipment, TENS, CPM devices, contracture treatment devices: Dynamic Splints and NMES devices.  Suppliers that dispense other types of DMEPOS such as respiratory equipment, wheelchairs, diabetic shoe inserts, hospital beds, blood glucose monitors and supplies and enteral nutrients should seek one of the other CMS accrediting bodies for DMEPOS.
